I have an area of 580cm x 290cm which has been dug over and I would like to grass over. Can anyone tell me what steps I need to take. I have a very helpful dad who can prepare the soil for me which seems pretty good soil but i have been told that it's good to cover the seed with plastic sheeting to help retain the moisture. I have loads of questions ie, is it wise to lay the seed now, how should i maintain it etc. BUT my biggest problem i think will be that i have a springer spaniel who I will need to keep off this area and would be grateful if anyone can suggest posts/netting that i could put up. Money is limited and i have thought of turfing but think this is too expensive and may not work either as good chance our springer could dig it up!

Any ideas:help: would be really appreciated!

I doubt the dog will dig up turf, once layed, compared to the damage they could do to a freshly sown lawn ...

... my preference would be to sow the lawn in the Autumn (soil warmer, it has 6 months to establish before the dry season (Summer) arrives, and the weeds grow slower /less in an Autumn-swon lawn than a Spring-sown one.

You are getting a bit late to sow this Spring anyway - you'll have a lot of work watering etc. to keep it alive during the Summer. But if it looks an eyesore and you need to do it then that's probably as good a reason as any!

    Hello and welcome to GC.

Turf it is my advice, the dog will destroy any thing you put in, but at least turf has a chance.
