As I mentioned in one of the weather threads, there have been longer and warmer interglacial periods than the one we are in. There have been 4 periods in this ice age where the ice has retreated to roughly where it is now.

Found a few sites that are of similar points of view.

    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/new...n-ice-age-cometh/story-e6frg73o-1111116134873

And there are some interesting links on this site.

    Not least, this one http://www.iceagenow.com/Antarctic_Snowfall_Has_Doubled_Since_1850.htm

    Better get a shovel.

Interesting stuff Ziggy. I don't know what the answer is. All I know at the moment is that a shovel is of no use at all. The white stuff is back as fast as it can be cleared.
The snow ploughs and gritters are working 24/7 to no avail.
And we thought last winter was bad .

Ziggy I have believed for a long time that temps are actually dropping again..:( The greenhouse gases are our problem for heating up.... :(
If the Gulf stream changes direction Britain will be left up the creek without a paddle as we are on the same as Canada at 51 degrees North & the 48th parallel is the line across USA & Canada... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! s00k
If it wasn't for the Gulf stream passing us we would be as cold as them now anyway......!!!!!! So I hope & pray it does change direction els we will be back in the ice-age I think.....:(

Last winter was bad Alice, but that was in January when the north atlantic conveyor suddenly switched to the west side of Greenland, leaving our harbours to ice up.

some thoughts from the other forum,

    http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/Cold-winters-16-years-t2581144.html

The ice sheets will only start advancing again if the snows of last winter have not melted by the time the snows of this winter fall on them.

So a good hot summer would keep the balance.

Cheers Marley, I'll watch all of that in a minute but just to put your mind at rest, the latest data from NASA shows that the occelation has in fact speeded up by 20% since the 1970s.

This climate modelling is far more complex than any of us expected.

Anyone else read Gilbert Whites' "Natural History of Selbourne"

He records a summer that got wiped out by an Icelandic volcanic eruption.

Sorry I dont read all the links as I dont get enough time.:o

But just picking up on what Marley said about the gulf stream makes me think that maybe the comparison with Canada needs to be clarified.

At 51 degrees latitude we are just north of Newfoundland, which gets pretty cold we are also just north of Vancouver, which gets similar weather to our norm, main difference being east and west coast, we face the prevailing winds from the Atlantic being northern hemisphere, in the same way I believe Vancouver gets prevailing winds from the Pacific.

The winds appear to be stuck in an easterly direction, due to high pressure over Scandinavia and low in the Med, hence the cold weather, its never been different, west is mild east is freezing in winter.

If this was summer we would be getting a heatwave.

    Too true Pete,

We're looking at the bigger picture, not just this weeks unusual for the time of year weather.

I'm just questioning the wisdom of the authorities that are imposing taxes upon us to combat global warming when the evidence points to global cooling and an ensuing ice age.

As I said Ziggy dont like too many links, I find them hard work, but I agree, we are being taxed under false pretences.

Yes Ziggy, I've got Gilbert White on the book case.
Must have a look and remind myself of what he said about that Icelandic Volcanic eruption.

Sorry Alice, i'm away from home so can't look up what page its on. He didn't know what was causing it as far as I remember, just reports of failed crops & lack of sunlight. Interesting reading with hindsight.

Having seen all the pictures from Auchterader on the TV tonight, I hope it's a little better for you in Perth, Alice. I'm with Ziggy's theories about the Ice age and no 'global warnings'.

For information on this subject you could try www.physorg.com :) However, be aware, this is a site that has "real" scientists on it. If you want to ask a question make sure that you make it plain that you're just seeking info. I'd suggest you don't just make a reference to an isolated incident in the past or refer to "inter-glacials". These guys are waaaay beyond that. Just sit on a chair in the corner and see what they have to say. It's fascinating.

Gee, thanks guys - just what I needed before a night's sleep - or not!

I've never subscribed to the global warming nonsense. Now it looks like maybe it was just a ploy to distract us!

All i know is ambulances do not arrive at addesses by magic. Last night was scary, tonight i'm on a response car that handles like a greasy pig. When we battle the elements for a muppet with a cut finger it's apparently bad form to slap them.
I'm leaving the heating on and the windows open.
Global warming needs to speed up a bit.

    Cheers
    David
