I tried to identify this plant late last summer and had various suggestions. A lot of them were different varieties of cow parsley type plants. I checked all of the suggestions on the web and in books and couldn't find a close enough match. We bought two of these plants in a nursery three years ago and have lost the label. They don't seem to propogate themselves like most cow parsley does. We haven't seen any seedlings at all but the plants grow very well.

This is the plant at the moment.

and how it looked late last June. It is the plant in the foreground. It grew to a height of about 6ft

Can anyone help with identification? [IMG]

    Hi Claire 75

Thanks, I know the one you give a link to looks similar but it isn't the same. Ours has a more compact flower head and the leaves are not trefoil. The one you show also says that it is rampant and although ours grows strongly it doesn't spread. I shall check out other Aegopodium.

    Thanks [IMG] [IMG]

I've just searched the Aegopodium family and can't find it there. [IMG]

could it be a sweet cicely? the leaves will smell of aniseed. although i think the leaves would be more 'fern like' than they appear on your photo

Not Sweet Cicely, I've got that and the leaves are very feathery. I've also got a plant which I bought as Valerian, which looks identical to yours. However I'm not convinced that mine is Valerian, I think it's Lovage, although the flowers are described as yellowish, and mine are white and have a lovely perfume.
I didn't realise that mine isn't Valerian until someone sent me some Valerian seeds [ Think it was Poppy?] which are like little dandelion seeds and my plants' are more. like lettuce.

Someone has said it is Verbena Patagonias but I don't think it is that either. [IMG]

I am pretty certain that is valariana officinalis - a herb, where the root used to make valium. I have it in my garden - and love it.

    Thanks JarBax

The flower certainly looks similar but the leaves on all the pictures I can find are much slimmer than our plants.

I'll post more photos as it grows. [IMG]

Palustris, I haven't checked angelica but we used to grow it and I don't remember it being the same.

    Thanks [IMG]

Valariana flowers, whilst pretty - are quite pungent - do you remember your having a smell?

Will see if I can get out and get a pic of our valarianas (they do seed around a bit), for comparison.

We have Valeriana in flower but only the pink/purple variety. The plant I'm trying to identify has a much flatter type flower and is white with a hint of pink. I don't remember any smell - but I don't remember trying to smell it [IMG] .

When it flowers I'll have a sniff.

    Thanks

    Hi Liz
I've looked up more references to Lovage and some of them have leaves that look similar. I'll have to taste the leaves of my plants. If I'm not back on GC for a long time you can assume they were poisonous [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
