Yesterday I noted that the blueberries on the lower branches of my patio bush were turning nicely 'blue'. Just one more day I thought and I'll pick those lower ones to put in with my breakfast cereal. Mmm. The pot is on my patio, very close to the house, and I have a cat who is frequently out there, so I didnt think birds would be too much of a problem. Out I go this morning to pick said beautifully plump fruit...... where has it gone ????? :skp:

I can't help you, Blueroses, but this year I seem to be suffering from gourmet woodpigeons. They are picking all the tiny olives off my tree!

I've watched a pair of blackbirds systemically work their way through my blueberries this year, first time for them to do it. I go out and chase them away...and they sit on a fence a couple of gardens down waiting for me to go in...

It'll be wild birds, I can guarantee it!

    Blackbirds most likely, Blueroses.
    They're fruit mad.

On my golf course there are half a dozen large "wild" cherry trees adjacent to one of the tees. Every year the small fruits slowly ripen and you may see a few stones on the ground before they are at their best. Then over a couple of days the whole crop has gone and there are masses of cherry stones on the ground. I guess the birds must come at first light and clear the lot.

The Magpies will love that - they really enjoy catfood and then you are providing dessert right next to it. :hehe:

Well it was actually a light hearted comment as I wouldnt want to attract rats/foxes either.

I hardly have enough berries to cover the bottom of a cereal bowl now :(

Blackbirds been having most of my wild strawbs as well. There is a baby one hanging out in the veg plot, so I can't begrudge a few.

So you're putting fleece out for them too, Blueroses.
Last year the Jackdaws ripped my fleece into bandages and stuffed them down my neighbours chimney for nesting material :D
Well I saw the funny side - but my neighbour who had a pretty bill to get her chimney unblocked wasn't so amused.
Birds - I just love them

Thing is I feed the birds ! I give the Goldfinches Niger seed ..... I give the Bluetits their nuts etc and the ground feeders their appropriate wild bird feed. Ungrateful lot now scoff my prized Blueberries. If they want to strip my fleece let 'em try. They didnt touch it when it covered the strawberries ! Grrrrrrr:flag:

    Air rifle anyone???

    Or just share your spoils.

I'll share with any birds barr pigeons and woodies. They are too greedy and too destructive.

I'll happily spare some berries for the birds, but when the pigeons turn up it's time for the rifle to come out ;)

I always remember my garndad sitting on the ouside loo with the door open, trousers and brases round his ankles! He had a catipult and a bag of pebbles to keep the birds off his plants and veg. Mrs Kelly next door frequently used to be heard from around the corner shouting, 'Wilf have you got a shilling for me meter?' LOL
