Anyone got any tips for a very frustrated kitchen maid?! No matter what I do with my spuds they seem to chit and go soft in a matter of a couple of weeks. Well, I live on my own, y'see and a 5kg bag of potatoes lasts me quite a while. Yet no matter where I put them, cool, dark, well ventilated, they're inedible very quickly.

So why do we dig a couple fo bags full of spuds from the garden and keep them from Sept/Oct till after Christmas? Doesn't make sense!

    Any tips?

The good thing about home grown spuds is that we know they haven't been subjected to chemicals. But like you MD ours never seem to keep beyond January when they start developing shoots like Triffids. Even stored in the dark in a cool shed they sprout.
I wonder if spuds stored in the old style clamps with layers of straw and earth would keep for longer. I've given up growing maincrop now and only grow earlies as I reckon that given the cheap price of local spuds I can get more benefit by using the land for other veg.

I did a bit of an experiment with my maincrop spuds the winter before last, i left them in the ground clamped up.
they lasted till the end of feb!!!
i only had a couple with small sprouts(end of the row)
and a couple that the slugs got.
overall they kept in perfect condition [IMG]
i didnt do it this winter because they were a flop!
but if i have another good crop this year i will do the same again for sure.
saves baggin n storing, plus checkin n space.
