    Hi All
I am harvesting cucumbers and they taste great but they keep going soft in the fridge any ideas how to slow this as they are going soft after only about 24hrs.

    Thanks

    Dave

Great question David - I haven't had that problem yet - with five boys who all love cucumbers, and their friends who have realised how much better homegrown tastes - I haven't had one long enough to put in the fridge. On the off chance that I might in the next few weeks though - will await the proper storage recommendations!

Cucs don't like being kept in a fridge, though you can pop one in for a couple of hours before eating if you like eating them cold. Best place to store is somewhere cool like the bottom of a cupboard. If you start using one and can't use it all, wrap the cut end with cling flim to stop it drying.
We find ours keep for 3 or 4 days before they start to go soft.

I think I heard/read/saw somewhere that you can store them on the plant, by cutting only what you want to eat..for example just cut half a cucumber of the plant. The cut end on the plant will callous over and stay fresh.

You might want to wait until someone confirms this here though before you do it, but I'm sure thats correct.

    Steve...:)

They store longer out of the fridge. If several come at once we wrap them individually in cling film to make them last a day or two longer.

I'm wiht the cling film approach. I reckon that is why the ones in the supermarket are shrink-wrapped

Robert is saddened to read this because I have only had one market more cucumber from one plant with the promise of another half fattened and one other in flower stage.
So, you see I dont have a storage problem....:dh:

Is that the recovery-time after the first-flush?

JWK recommends taking off the first half dozen flowers so that the plants mature a bit longer before starting the bear fruit - otherwise they think "job done" after the first seeds are achieved :(

I certainly do, you've got to be cruel to them initially.
