Now that I live on my own I find I have to throw quite a few potatoes away as they sprout before I get to using them.

I googled and read that if you put an apple in with the potatoes it will prevent them from sprouting so quickly.

Has anybody tried this and is it successful - or is it just a myth?

Never heard of that one,but why do you have to throw away the sprouted potatoes? As long as the tuber is not green they are still edible, just cut off the sprouting bits.

I find that usually once they start to sprout they go soft, and I mean really sprout, not just a small shoot.
I put my onions in the fridge, this time of year, I have an old fridge in the garage that I also use for apples.
I tend to think it might be too cold for spuds and they might taste sweet if left in there for long, so never tried it.

      Just to update:
It is now a month since I put apples in with my potatoes and up to now
there has only been one potato with a small shoot! So, coincidence or not
it seems to work at the moment.

      :fingers crossed:
