Somewhere dark, cool and frost free. Unless you are chitting them, they need to stay in the dark as light will make them sprout from the eyes on the spuds, warmth will also make them start to sprout, so keep them cool. freezing temperatures will ruin them so they need to be kept frost free.

But if you are chitting them, arrange them in trays (egg trays are good for this) and leave them out in the light but still cool and frost free. Chitting them just allows the sprouts from the spuds eyes to grow strongly prior to them going in the ground, and gives them a good head start.

Personally I would start them chitting now. In good light, and frost free temperatures, they'll only make a half-inch or so of chit over the next month or so.

I store mine in the outside loo, in a cardboard box!

I only have maincrop seed potatoes so I don't bother with chitting, first and second earlies I would chit, find I get a better crop without chitting maincrop spuds.
