Every day, I receive e-mails written in strange characters - foreign alphabets and various symbols. I thought at first that I had some kind of virus, but repeated scans with two different anti-virus proagrammes did not detect any problem. Thr sernder's name differs each time, so altjough I use the "Block Semder" facility. they just keep coming. Does anyone know what they may be, and how to get rid of them?
    Laurie.

    Hi Laurie
I was born down the road from you in Darlaston, by the football pitch (if its not been developed by now)
I used to get 100s of those when i was with Tiscali, but since i switched to sky i dont get bothered much ,i had one the other day that i did not recognise sender so i dont open, and marked it spam and it goes directly to the spam box, its emptied automatically every 30 days so i look every few weeks ,just to be sure there is nothing i want in there .
But i never open anything i dont recognise :skp:

PS on the darlo subject there was a massive allottment site by the baths back of slater st school is that still there :cnfs:

no idea of how to stop them, but i've installed http://www.spamfighter.com it basically sends all suspect mail to a spam folder without you having to look at them. If an eamil gets through, you can block the sender and it adds it to the database. I regularly get 50 - 100 spam emails and this program seems to get 99% of them.

Same here, recently aswell. I use the btyahoo email service and log directly on to the web page to read them. They ditch all the spam for me.

Hi Laurie, I have been having loads of spam to one of my addresses too. Luckily I am with a 'thing' that lets you see the e-mail before you open. I spam everything I don't know, but still wonder how they get the address! Don't get it on the others cos I never 'look' at anything I'm not sure of.

It's really annoying isn't it? Should be able to just say ' take me off your list' like we can do on the phone now. But it would just 'open' your mail so they know you are there! Any knowhow you get let me know too - we have loads of help on here.

    cheers

Just seen this. I think companies get hold of e-mail addresses by scanning information that is already on the web in messages sent. Which is why sometimes people say in a post my address it [email protected] they then follow it by saying to reply remove my knickers :D That way the automatic scanning devices get the wrong address.

You can get more information if you right click on an e-mail and choose properties and details. I had one e-mail which was sent to 200 people with my just a single letter changed each time. Ie generated at random - it costs nothing. Companies also sell e-mail addresses, ie £5 for 10,000 addresses. The one thing you musn't do it to reply in any way. If you do they know it is a genuine address and will bombard you more.

I suspect that are getting e-mails in another language that you computer cannot display - ie chinese.

I am afraid that these spam emails will keep coming, all you can do is delete them.

I don't use POP settings on my emails, I use IMAP settings. This only allows the headers to be downloaded onto your computer, the email itself stays on the server. When I delete them they are deleted from the server. Emails I wish to save, I make a folder named "File Cabinet" on the server and move them to that. If necessary, you could put other folders within that.

I do the same as Claire. I'm also with BT and all the emails are filed in my account on the BT site. BT classify them into two files 'Inbox' and 'Junk/Spam' and just shows the sender and the heading/subject. Each morning before downloading emails I check my account. I quickly run through the Junk/Spam and have a quick look at any I think might be genuine (about 1%). I then transfer genuine ones to the Inbox. I also check the Inbox just in case any spam has got through their filters. I then just use Outlook to download to my computer.

It takes me about 10 minutes each morning to check through all our email accounts and to just download the genuine ones but I don't get any rubbish onto my computer. We get about 30 genuine emails and 100 junk every day so 10 minutes isn't too bad :thumb:

I use TalkTalk - don't know if it's relevant but I get no more than 2-5 junk emails a day!
