Strawberries

    I have never grown strawberries before. If I plant strawberry plants now, when can I expect them to fruit

    You'll probably get some fruit this summer, but it'll be a better crop next year.

    I planted a packet of alpine straw berry seeds last year suprise suprise they all germinated,they over wintered quite well in a large pot outside and are now showing signs of growth not quite sure what to do next plant them out in a bigger pot? or the ground, slugs etc may well go for them I reckon bit of advice please. Rosietutu

    Not had probs with slugs eating the plants, its the berries they like. I'd get them in the ground.

    I also got some strawberry plants today and planted then outside, thanks for the info:)

    i was given 1 plant last year and took 2 runners from it and all 3 did well outside over winter , they a growing very well aswell this year , i too had never grown any aswell but i havent grown much at all lol

    Make sure you put some sort of mulch under them before they set a crop, straw is good, hence the name, keeps em off the ground, stops em rotting & makes a good presentation for Mr Blackbirds lunch.

    Feed em when the fruits start to swell too.

    I wonder if I could use wood shavings instead of straw to keep my strawberrys off the ground. Also can someone recommend some good ways of stopping slugs from eating the fruit please?
