A few of my potted runners from last year now have small flowers/fruits developing, would you advise cutting them off to promote leaf growth or leave them on?

It goes against conventional advice, but I'd leave them on. Then you'll get some fruit instead of no fruit. By the end of the year you'll have probably 5 times as many plants for next year anyway.

My dad adopted this strategy with about a dozen young plants he bought about 5 years ago. Now about half his allotment is dedicated to strawberries, and he still has enough surplus plants to give some away each year. He also gets more strawberries than he can use up. We get loads off him, as do other family members, and last year he still had enough to make a dozen or so jars of jam, which he tells me were a horrible failure, but we live and learn:)
