My current strawberry bed is overrun, mostly with weeds, but there's a fair amount of strawberries there too. My plan is to start again, new plot and make ridges about 8 inches high, cover in carpet and plant the strawberries through holes cut in the carpet. I might install a dribble water system, cheepo end of Woolies deal that's sitting in the loft. Result hoped fr is minimal weeding. I'm not worried about aesthetics.

    Any pointers?

Carpet is a good idea - it will cut out the weeds for sure. It will also let water through when it rains. Not so sure that you'll need an irrigation system in the Western Isles.
Scatter a good general fertiliser, and maybe a few slug pellets, before laying the carpet.
