I was looking some advice on strawberry runners. Was thinking to buy some strawberry runners to plant now in pots for cropping next season.
Is now a good time to plant bare root runners?
    Can anyone recommend a variety?
The ones i had in mind were either Marshmello, Cambridge Favourite or Flamenco!
    Thank you

    Hiya Aidan mc:)
Yes good time to plant out those runners

I grew a few varieties this year and the old Cambridge Favourite was the best flavoured for me:)

      Hi,

A little puzzled by your post as you say "buy to plant now "

Most suppliers we have seen do not send out loose/bare rooted plants much before November when they will have developed a good root system over the summer and then gone dormant.

Now, most runners are just rooting so it would not be good to send them out so young.

Might be better looking out for existing strawberry plants that look decent but not sold in the garden centers this spring /summer, if they are repotted or planted out in good soil they should be much stronger plants next year than this years runners.

      Hi Ricky,

I was looking online suppliers on amazon and seen a place Gardeners Dream selling bare rooted runners. They seem to be selling runners now....i wonder if they would be last years??

Would you recommend waiting until november then?

        Hi,

Well we bought this offer a couple of years ago and were well pleased.
        Strawberry | 5 Elsanta & 5 Free Florence Runners

As you can see they do not dispatch until October, though that can be delayed depending on the weather. eg a long hot autumn.

As for ordering them now, we wouldn't, as all the major suppliers seem to do the same.
However perhaps some other members can say if they have found summer supplied mail order ones are ok ?

However at the price they are offering them , inc postage (?) it might be worth a punt, as you can still buy replacements well into March next year for fruiting that year, if the above prove poor.
