I am looking for a good strimmer to use at the allotment. There is no power there so it needs to be a petrol or cordless one. I would like one that isn't too heavy or difficult to use. Can anyone recommend a good make or model? (My budget is about £80-£90)

    Thanks very much

you're asking! I don't rate cordless garden tools at all, I find they haven't enough oomph (good technical term!). And new petrol ones cost rather more than that. When I was looking for a second-hand one, I was told that they rarely come on the market, unlike lawn-mowers - so - you may be out of luck, unless someone knows different....

You don't know anyone who could lend you one for some gardening favour in return?? It's possibly your best bet - and gets you to know other people on the allotment!

i don t rate strimmers at all, and find them difficult to use, the big ones have a harness and cost about £300, small "domestic" ones are noisy and ineffective imo
mc culloch make petrol ones in your price range, but don t expecthem to last a liftime, also you must wear a visor as bits fly around, and you need to be fully protected - boots gloves etc ........ OR you could probably hire one , or rent an operator for a few hours, to my mind you are better to invest in good quality hand tools and avoid power tools .... you can buy a small slasher for £20 and it will be there for you year in year out,
is the strimmer for any particular job? .... there may be another way to go.

Ryobi and Stihl also have small petrol models around that price. I bought the smallest Stihl one but I think the Ryobi might be the lightest. They're fine for domestic gardeners but as LG says if you can manage a handtool it will last longer and keep you fitter.
I agree that cordless electric tools are not as satisfactory.

You could always hire one if you can get it done in a day, then you do not have the cost of repairs after the warranty has expired. I hire a petrol lawn scarifier every 2 or 3 years for 1/2day and that way I always have a up to date model.

Agree with Hans, hiring is the best option.
if you do hire ask the hire company for the protective visor/goggles to go with it.
another option is to look locally for an odd job man with a strimmer, he may charge you the same to do the job as hiring, worth a try!

I know of at least one council who always hires the strimmers the men use - so they always have the most up-to-dat-model, like Hans says!! ;)
