I can't blame it on the growing season this year but I have several things which have resolutely refused to flower, despite being big, well-grown and otherwise trouble free. They include my brugmansia (didn't get capsid bug this year, but still no flowers anyway), my large pot of morning glory and a large pot of mina lobata. I don't normally have any problems with those.

Now it's so late I can't see that they'll flower now.

    Any ideas?

My Cosmos and Calendula have only started fleeting in the last week or so, which I thought was strange aswell.

My Cosmos took forever to flower, and I still have a couple of plants that are only just budding up ! My thoughts are the very hot weather we had, checked them back a little. Now it has cooled somewhat they are kicking in again. :dunno:

My cosmos have been rubbish to and only just started looking good in the past couple of weeks, helenium 'Lemon Queen' which would normally be a mass of blooms by now has only a few tiny flowers where as 'Moerheim Beauty' is on its second flush and looked great all summer :dunno:.

These 2, Salvia Hans and Dolicenthe are driving me nuts. I'm fairly certain they are not going to flower this season - after all the care they have had..

Brug could be feed. Can't over-feed them. If same-pot same-soil as previous years you might not have been generous enough?

Apart from things that are in pots I certainly did not water well enough during the dry spell we had in early Summer (June I think?) and lots of things have, now, put on a puny show compared to normal. The XXX flowers on my normally-huge Dahlias are just normal sized :( and the Bishop or Llandaff are disappointing small ...

I have kept the brug well-fed but it probably is a bit pot-bound and, yes, in the same pot as last year. Also, it has not branched, just grown straight up but big and fat. It has thrown up one or two side shoots from the roots, one of whi have taken a cutting off, the other is still on.

My cosmos is flowering OK - usually that fails for me!

      Evidence for the prosecution.....

Defendant #1 Cosmos, Sown on the same day as defendant #2 Cosmos, potted up to 3" pots in same compost on same day as defendant #2 . Potted up into 10" pot same day and same compost as defendant#2. Both defendants were kept in the same border next to each other up until a week ago. Defendant #2 was moved as kept getting blown over by high winds. That and only that has been the difference in how I have treated these plants. Same watering, same feed everything.....

Defendant #1 You can see where the flower buds will form (the lighter areas) but nothing yet!

      cosmos2.jpg

Defendant #2 After a good dead head today, but you can see all the buds, and this one has flowered its socks off.

      cosmos3.jpg

The evidence is further supported My lords and Ladies, with the following co-defendants.
3 Cosmos all from the same batch as defendants 1&2, only difference is they were planted in the border (no additional feed). All 3 show different stages of development the 1 at the back, masses of flowers, in front just coming into bud (that is the growth tip buds!), to the left, not even budding (yet).

      cosmos1.jpg

There my honors I rest my case, it has been a strange year for Cosmos ! :dunno:

My thoughts on Brugs are, probably the wrong feed, too much nitrogen.
I've had one flower all summer in quite a small pot, watering has been a nightmare, but it's flowered profusely.
Another couple of plants in bigger pots have grown some very nice leaves and are only just flowering.

I did have an Erythrina that looked like it was going to be amazing this year, it stalled during the hot weather and has only produced one flower spike.

But on the whole its been a good year for me, just wish we could get a long Indian Summer now to ripen growth before the onset of winter.

Gdnam.......Perhaps they don't like having their feet crammed into pots. All mine were in beds and have put on a great display. It's the first time I've grown them this year and definitely a must for next year. :dbgrtmb:

Had a look today and I do suspect there is a bud about 2" long hanging off the top of the brug. Must be a frost due.
