My lettuces are just not hearting up, they took a while to grow but now they're a reasonable size, but when I pulled a couple to-day the root system was almost non existant, They were planted in new soil with home made compost with added chicken pellets, any help PLEASE

What variety wee tattie? Lettuces don't have much of a root system usually, or at least the ones I grow (Little Gem) don't.

Are you watering them wee tattie? A good solid watering (one litre per plant, aimed at the base of the plant) once a week, or twice if it is very dry, should help. Whereas watering just the surface won;t do much good.

It's been pretty dry these last couple of weeks ...

Thanks, John and Kristen - Little Gem, All year round, and these curly frilly ones, though they're not so bad, They are watered daily, I get just enough leaves for a salad for myself, how come the ones in the shop are firm and tight hearted?,

lollo rosso are going great guns, but my rocket flowered on me and shrivelled long before it would have been of any use. Still finding my feet a bit with edible gardening and a bit hit and miss at the moment.

I've stated picking the outside growers, the ones that should have been thinned, and about 5 makes a salad for one, LOL but some others are hearting up better, the cut and come again ones are really taking off, on another note, my peppers are very slow, maybe it's the chilly wind we are constantly having this year. Got flowers on the dwarf beans, and about 4 tomatoes though still very green it's getting exciting, but Lor' do you need patience.

I was discussing my lettuces with a friend who has just sarted veg for the first time, she told me her lettuce wasn't growing either, I mentioned I was glad it rained as I was fed up watering them, she said, 'are you supposed to water them' ? LOL
