Yes.. You can tell I'm a newbie..:lollol: What are the main things i should be putting aside to use on my compost? Anything that i really should'nt use? And are there better things for different uses? Any help would be greatly apprieciated.. :D
Do not use meat. Do not use cooked food. Avoid perennial weeds unless you're really confident the temperature will get hot enough to kill. Other than that, if its compostable, compost it! Get a good mix of green stuff (grass, leafy plants, veg peel etc) and woodier stuff (paper shreddings, shredded wood) and keep it moist but not wet. Oh, and pee on it (yes, really)! There's quite a few threads to do with the 'perfect blend' so a search may also help.
Some people keep weeds out - because you will put the weed seed in with the plants, and that will survive unless the heap gets really hot. I chuck everything in regardless (excluding meat etc. as Loofah said) If you have access to fresh manure then putting a layer a few inches thick every foot or so will accelrate the temperature, as will peeing on it. (I use both). Mix the more-woody stuff and the green stuff - lawn mowings will just go slimey unless mixed with other materials. Don't put anything in that has had weed killer on it - including selectively lawn weed killer (like "Weed and feed") for several lawn cuts (it will say on the lawn chimal packet how many / long) Very woody stuff needs leaving out, or "chipping" first (and then only add in small quanitites mixed well with greener stuff) Don't put diseased plants in the heap (the diseases may remain) and I am caution about putting Potato and Tomato plant residue - because their diseases tend to stick around :(
If your using a cone shaped bin then sit it on chicken wire to exclude rats. Ill compost all weeds excludeing bindweed and groundelder. Avoid putting in anything thats gone to seed for obviuse reasons!
i'm getting 1 of these after for £10 up our recycling tip.It looked much bigger than i thought it would too...
its massive and they have loads of them.So many ask for them they are all cover in dust i felt liking buying the lot:lollol:
Hi all. I've read this section with interest as I've just ordered my first compost bin. Is it ok to put in the contents of my rabbit hutch, newspaper, sawdust and what has come out of them into the bin? Regards.
"Is it ok to put in the contents of my rabbit hutch, newspaper, sawdust and what has come out of them into the bin?" Yup, vegetarian pets are fine - so not the Dogs and Cats, but the Guinea pig and Rabbits will be fine. A Paladin says mix it with other stuff for best results.
every now and again I add horse muck to mine. Just a layer every couple of weeks makes fantastic compost for next year.
