hi all

pond liner going in tomorrow and i was wondering what stones to put in the bottom of pond or pebbles ?

Q) What stones / pebbles to put in a pond?

A) When you install a liner you should install a pond pre liner or a 2 inch thick layer of sand* carpets or old newspapers will not do.

You put down this layer to protect the liner from...............................................stones.

Any stones under the liner can puncture it due to weight / pressure of water. Any stones on the liner can puncture it when you put them in or stand on it.

Also, unlike a fish tank you can't use a small vacuum cleaner or siphon to clean the stones, you need pond vacuum (which will pull the stones out) and even with a small pond a decent enough layer of stones can be in the region of a tonne. The only way to clean them is to dig them out, but you can't do that as it has a liner.

In short, you don't treat a pond the same as you can a fish tank.






* Dependant on brand of liner, as the 25+ year g'tee will be void unless you use their brand of underlay.

iv a bed of sand on the hole and got under liner with my pond liner ,
im putting the foam board 50mm insulation around the 4 sides of pond then put liner over it ,
