    Blimey.

That reminds me of the exploding toad incident. Crows learned how to precisely extract toads livers, avoiding the toxic skin. Without the liver the poor things just swelled up till they popped:thud:

Good grief that is so sad.. Not one for fish in a pond but I know if it were me I would be devastated too...!

On the other hand it is nice to know the Otter numbers are rising though.. A very bitter sweet pill to have to swallow...

    Oh!

So, because the otters ate their fish (which I do understand is devastating) not only do the otters now have to suffer the consequences, but so now will the ducks, frogs, newts, herons, kingfishers and the snakes? :cry3: And the local children who visited won't get to see the wildlife now either!

All the fish have been nabbed out of my pond too (by gulls!) ... fill in it?
No chance! It wasn't simply the fish which benefitted from it. It is now a "wild life" pond.

Ho hum; takes all sorts to make a world.

Agree with all you said Mum

Including journalists who may well have hyped this into a mag-selling-story

Googled for "thetford otter linda alan brown" - 13,600 results including dailies, BBC and ITV news, the New Zealand Herald ...

miles of negative feedback against the writer of the piece in local rags. Sorry, but I think it has more to do with "headlines sell news"

Totally agree; however, one also has to question if the Brown's were paid for their story/pictures, too.

In which case, it blows holes in their " ... it's not about the money".
        Sour grapes, I feel.

Or, is this 'kite-flying' anti-otter propoganda?

Say what you like. If one keeps fish as I do (Koi) and they feed out of your hand, one can't help but feel some attachment....

It's the same for the owners of commercial fisheries who have invested thousands of pounds into their business and are constantly threatened by Cormorants and Otters. I do know that some owners quietly "deal" with the Cormorants even though it is illegal to do so........I just hope it doesn't happen to the Otters.
The only danger to my wild life pond is the occasional Heron but they very rarely visit or have chance to stay long because of my two Moggies who's, while not attacking the Heron, every presence put's him off doing any damage.:cat-kittyandsmiley:

Excuse my ignorance, but should they not be kept indoors during the 'late' hours?

They can't get out of my garden, Freddy, due to the 8' high fences, although one of them, [Jenny], was tested every inch of them just like the Raptor in Jurassic Park!!! So they are safe and, of course, other cats can't get in.:snork:

Indeed. But who's to say it was an otter? You go on holiday, come back, fish are gone, neighbour says something half ate them all but didn't want to bother you on holiday so cleared up all the mess for you ... strikes me anything could have happened. Might have been an otter of course ...
