I have a question - do the suet blocks, bought from various outlets, go 'off' after a period of time ?

I bought some in the winter and have been using it up over the months and i wondered if it was still okay, there's clearly no problem from the birds' point of view but thought i'd pose the question anyway.
Does anyone have any knowledge on the subject ?

Not sure, but I'd imagine the fat/lard that binds everything together will have a shelf life?

Fat does go rancid, even in the freezer.

I'm hoping its not toxic as the only bit of protein in the freezer was a very old herring which i'm eating right now.:OUCH:

I usually keep my box of Suet in the cold basement, and it takes several months to get through it, never had an issue. The birds gingerly eat it up so quickly and it always looks great.
I also never had an issue keeping butter in the freezer. Also keep in the freezer pine nuts a very fatty nut, never goes rancid on me.

Just been reading up on pine nuts Esther, on account of the thread we've got running on monkey puzzle trees.

They can occasionally cause a loss of taste or a metalic taste that lasts for days.

Yep, heard that also Ziggy about the metalic taste. BUT, I do use them in pasta/veggie meals and I have not had that issue of metalic taste or loss of taste ever in the many years I have used them. Also will just eat a hand full just like that because they are so yummy, (not often ---they are high fat). Also my husband eats them too, and the same no issues.
