Hi can anyone suggest a cheap fast growing flowering shrub bush?
It is to plant behind our fence(there is a railway line there about 20ft away) to add a bit more privacy Butterfly bush has come to mind ,my wife is not to keen on conifers, so any suggestions for a cheap but tough flowering shrub bush that grows to about 6-7ft I dont mind trimming to keep in check
    Thanks

As you suggested, Buddleia...and its proximity to the railway line will be quite appropriate:D

Buddleia is best if cut down to about 2' every February, so you won't have much "top" until mid summer. You could leave it to grow taller though, but I don't think it will perform as well.

I think Eleagnus grows quite vigorously, well suited if you use buddleia too.

Perhaps you could plant a line of willow whips as well and coppice them.

boring but does the job - fast growing, evergreeb and flowers for about 4/6 months during the winter - Viburnum tinus Eve Price

Photina Red Robin - evergreen and new leaves are red, trim twice a year.

    Forsythia - trim after flowering

Golden leaf privet - surprising good all year round

    Lilac

Elderberry - can get yellow and black leave varieties

Philadelpus - get the taller varities

Leycesteria - loved by the birds

What about a laurel, (Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia') which will give a green background to what you have in the garden. It also has a white flower if left to grow, and will tolerate a severe hack back to stumps if required.

    Hope this Helps!
