"Summer baskets bits and bobs " 2014

Hi All,

Some of the GC member's thought it would be a good idea to start a basket thread and other bits and bods that you grow in pots/troughs etc

It will be good to see how they develop over the summer

Here my two early days as I planted them later than normal 16 inch baskets full sun from 1.00pm till dusk

Lobelia Richardii -Waterfall
Petunia Surfinia Picotee Blue
Verbena Rapunzel Red -
Begonia Crackling Fire Creamy Yellow
plus two different varieties of trailing fuchsia Cecile & Heri Mochara

 

What a thoughtful choice of plants that will compliment each other as the baskets develop over the season Spruce. Thank you for itemising the plants too - most useful,

Hanging baskets and wall baskets today:
My £5 bargain from Chichester Cathedral Flower Festival last month. Only 3 plants in this basket - none has withered so far so no dead heading. Would recommend these Caibrachoas - tough,very floriferous and a pleasing shape.
This is the mauve side
and the white side

Begonia Sutherlandii and a peach Diascea

and at last, the sweet pea and pink diascea basket has got a wiggle on

and finally , just a standard trailing geranium and trailing lobelia and a choral diascea mix

Looking good Jen and two sides to you as well Caibrachoas is a must try next year I think they have improved how long they last, I have tried in the past but dint last the cause.

I made the list so I can see if I want to plant similar next year plus you may be tempted

Its probably a question with all the obvious answers, but why are your Baskets to far ahead of my Tubs?

I sow quite early, mollycoddle reasonably well, grow on under glass as long as possible (believing that I am creating "speed") ... and am no where near your amount of dropping-growth or flower-quantity :(

In my defence I grow far too much stuff, so nothing gets proper individual attention. All 9cm potted plants are on capillary matting, so have to make do with quite a wet growing environment (which doesn't suit everything). As per separate post I am not convinced that the JAB compost I am using is achieving best-results either

and with additional benefit of hindsight I should have gone for Flood and Drain, rather than Capillary matting. This was the thread where I first debated the choices:

Lovely basket photos Shiney , Jenny , Spruce ,nice mix of flowers for me to take a few tips for next year . I'll ask for IDs later if that's OK . @shiney , are these photos from 2013 or this year ? Just got back from holiday and only now are my baskets springing into life.
