Salvia "Black and Blue set seed for the first time last year and they have germinated in just four days! What I'm hoping is that they will revert back to the species.

For those who are new to Salvia here is a link to Robins Salvias. Great source of inspiration and of seed at the beginning of the year when he does his seed sale.

I had some of these from Jenny and they've just started germinating after just two days :hapydancsmil:

They take a little longer to germinate - a week or two maybe. Very hardy Salvia although it can get big.

Sorry Philomel, I really don't know. Maybe one or two of the other Salviafiles will be able to help,
                Jenny

Thanks Jenny, I've always taken cuttings of this one, but you never know, you might end up with something really interesting even if it doesn't come true :)

According to Robins 95% come true.

                  That's my thinking as well.

Thanks @longk and I'm going to have a look at the Robins site now. I love salvias, but they don't like the conditions here in the main. I'll just have to keep on amending the soil! :wallbanging:
Lots of grit needed plus umbrellas for the winter and spring ;)

I reckon that there is a Salvia for every condition @philomel

Sown about half of the seed I got from Robins and after less than a week I've got 90/95% germination :hapydancsmil:

                          Wow that's impressive :wow:

Which ones should I try on heavy clay, baked in the summer and drowned in the winter and spring? Winter temps can go down to -15C usually -5/-8C. The only one I've managed to keep alive outdoors, apart from the shrubby ones like Royal Bumble, is Salvia involucrata 'Bethelli'. That was in my last garden which wasn't quite such heavy clay, in the shade in the shelter of a wall, with rain run off from a downpipe going past it's roots.
I'd welcome any suggestions cos I love them!

@philomel - S.glutinosa is bombproof although it does get very large................
                          DSC_2645.jpg

You should find that S.microphylla is tough enough. And if you dig out a three or four metre area and modify the soil you could have a spot dedicated to Salvia?
