I have collected my sweet pea seeds and put them in a envelope.
When i come to plant them would like to know when i do this and should i plant them in idividual pots indoors or plant them outside were i want them to grow, obviously when i mean outside it will be on my balcony eventually. [IMG]

Rosa, you can plant Sweet Peas in the autumn as they are a hardy annual and can overwinter. This also has the advantage of earlier flowering. I always plant mine where I want them to grow and I find the root system is stronger than potting them up and then re-planting them. [IMG]

PS I do mine here about November-time but perhaps by you it should be October-ish!

I saved my seed last year and grew them in Feb in loo rolls and put them out in the spring - a bit late cos it was so cold and they were very late flowering but are lovely now [IMG]

I sow mine with my runner beans - cross polination !

Always get bumper flowers and ditto beans.

Plant both in loo rolls or root trainers, then harden off and plant out together.

Surely sweet peas and runner beans, while related, can't cross pollinate each other?

One year I planted seeds at the end of August and they still produced a good show for the following year. I tend not to fuss with these seeds too much. I sow several of each variety in each pot (or sometimes in individual cell containers) and just leave outside to germinate and overwinter and plant out in March. Having said that, I did "pinch out" a couple of plants this year - following the advice of another thread - which, indeed, do appear to be growing more vigorously than their companions.

hi daisybelle, i have an old gardening book by percy thrower and in that he allway plants his sweetpeas by his runner beans, peas, legumns etc, etc, as this will encourage bees and insects day and night to visit his plants helping pollination, and keeping down pestbugs,
    hope this helps

    Windy -

It seems we have the same book

The added bonus is the dappling of colour amongst the beans !

I think that I will try this, sounds like a good idea and as you say oktarine, the added bonus of more colour.

I'm only just getting started on collecting seed, but from what I've read so far the seed is best sown at the time it would have dropped. Has anyone tried sowing as soon as the seeds are ready?
