I have been inundated with flies this year, a neighbour says it's because I have a tub of sweet peas outside my kitchen door! Could this be true? I haven't heard of this before. I know there is a herb you can have on your windowsill to prevent flies, anyone know which herb it is? Somewhere in my mind is Sage or Basil?

Tansy will deter flies, also ants, if hung in a bunch in the doorway. Depends if you like the smell yourself! Chamomile can also be used like this, but I think the one you're thinking of is basil. This does work, I try to put a sprig or two on the table if eating out as well.

Thanks, Liz. Next time I go to Tesco/Asda (probably Monday, as is my wont) I'll pick up a pot of basil.

Couldn't help mbut notice all the pets. Probably because i work with them lol. Did you know that Citronella plants and cat pee bushes are great for keeping your beloved pets away from those special area's in the garden?

    Just a random thought

I have never heard of it being called that before. Also if it is catmint then it has the opposite effect on cats. Many plants of nepeta get squashed flat because of the local moggies rolling in it. Nepeta actually has quite a pleasant smell.
Talking of bushes that smell of cat pee, as Pete said, does nayone else think that flowering currant (Ribes) foliage smells of cat pee? If you prune them there is a definite pong.
