Why are people telling me to plant sweet peas now? Is it not far too early? Up here its seriously cold.

Because they don't know what your local conditions are like.
I started some in November in cold greenhouse and some more were started late February again in cold greenhouse.

You can sow seeds in the house now if you do not have a greenhouse or plant seeds or young plants direct into the soil later next month, they will all give a good display, just a little later.

I'd buy plants mid to end of April.

Seems TVs BeechGrove is back a week on Friday 6th April, they usually cover Sweetpea growing.

For us, BG always been a more interesting / down to earth program to watch than Gardeners World, though having said that last Fridays GW was a lot more varied for a change.

I never sow any seeds until mid April. Sooner than that and you have to find room for them when they grow and it's too cold to put them outside. They always catch up.

I sow Sweetpeas in October in the greenhouse, they are already big enough to be in big pots and happily climbing up canes. They will go outside in May. By sowing in October I find I have bigger, stronger plants.

Good luck with renovation. Very tight for space in my greenhouse with 170 dahlias in there and loads of pots of seeds germinating so will be glad to put the sweet peas outside.
