Can someone give me some advice as to what could be wrong with this sweetcorn plant please. It was grown from a packet of Early Extra Sweet sweetcorn and was planted out in early June along with all the other plants grown from the same packet of seeds. All the others have grown as proper plants and are just getting their cobs as the flowers have set their pollen. This plant though appears to have become multi stemmed and now has what appears to be strange spikes on the end of the stems but i am not sure what could be going on.I am letting the plant grow to see how it progresses but I am not sure exactly what i shall get out of it as i can't see any cobs coming and the plant has bushed out rather than grown straight like all the others....

If someone has any ideas I would be glad to hear them...Thanks:)
This is the plant in question...

Hi Kandy, it looks like millet. Somebody was querying it a couple of days ago, but I can't find the thread again.

      Hi Kandy.

If it's not forming properly, maybe it's a 'sport' ?

I thought maybe the growing point had got damaged early on and its bushed out, a bit like pinching out the tip.

Are the "strange spikes on the end of the leaves", not the same as the male flowers that form at the tops of the plants?

Sheal,I never thought of millet as the ones I used to buy for my budgies was longer and slimmer but you could be right that it might be a form of millet although the seed was just a normal looking sweetcorn seed. Thanks for your suggestion though:thumbsup:

Freddy I thought it must be something different the way it was growing and even thought it was more than one plant in the hole but when i looked at the base of it,it is definetley one plant. The only other thing that was diffrent was that the seeds were a red colour which the packet stated was a coating to get a better germination rate in cooler conditions, but it still is a mystery. If the plant produces any seed then i will post some piccys to show you all how it turns out.I was even going to send a photo to Kew but looking on their website last night they said on there that they won't answer any mail or telephone queries sot hat is why i put the photos on here:)

Hi Pete,no the plant I am sure never got it's top broken off and it is just one plant that has decded for some genetic reason to form loads of spikes. The flower heads are at the end of each stalk but they have individual round parts to them almost like seeds inside of each flower. If I remember next time i go over i will see if i can get a close up of them to show how they are growing although they haven;t opened fully like a flower and there is nothing for the pollen if any to drop onto.
