We bought sweetcorn from a garden centre in a small flower pot. There were about 5 plants in each, but they were so tightly rooted together that we couldn't seperate them. I have looked up how to plant corn and it clearly says you should plant in grids individually. Whoops :hehe:

Will they be ok? As I say we have four clumps of five plants. They look extremely healthy, are about 2 foot tall and already we can see corn inside beginning to develop.

Also - how do I tell if carrots are ready to pull?

I am no expert but I have just planted seeds for my grandaughter which have sprouted. i think the grid thing is to keep them close together because of pollination so maybe yours are grand. Have you them in the garden or in containers? I don't know what to do with these.

Hi Vicki, dunno about the sweetcorn its years since I last tried growing it, at a guess I'd say they will do OK but maybe not as well as if they were given more space, still you have no choice now, just leave them be.

With carrots you can brush a little soil away from the biggest looking plant (going by leaf growth) to see the shoulders of the carrot, or if you look closely they will have pushed themselves out the soil a bit anyway. Then pull up the biggest looking ones. Theres no harm done if it turns out to be small they are very tastey. With mine I sow densley and never thin, just pull out the biggest as and when I need them, leaving space for the smaller ones to grow a bit more.

They are in the veg patch - I was just a bit concerned because of them being bunched, but they look ok on it!

Sweetcorn is a greedy plant - it does best in rich soil. So you might find that each plant only produces a single smaller cob as a result a of too much root competition.

However you should have no problem with poor pollination as they are so close together. Suggest a general feed is applied after a few weeks to help them along.

    Brilliant thanks :thumb:

I fed them with the miracle grow form the hose gun this morning. Will that suffice until they start producing, when I would swap to tomorite.
