Can anyone give me any infro how to grow sweetpea plants from seed. I have tried and nothing appeared. I have bought some more seeds and I am going to try again to germinate them in the greenhouse I know you are a clever lot regarding gardening so I hope I have some ideas from you. Thanks Jazz

Hi, jazz, haven't seen you for a while.

What do you mean you cannot grow Sweetpeas????

You pop them in the ground, water them and lo and behold, several weeks later you have these things emerging from the earth ... be it UK or Portugal!

Cannot imagine what you are doing wrong, love! [IMG]

Nah - I'm with you, jazz! Nothing I do ever seems to get the little blighters to germinate! I don't get much joy from bedding plants either. P'raps I've just got them in the wrong spot but I would love to have a frame covered with them right in front of my kitchen window!

Try soaking the seeds in warm water overnight before planting. Plant them either where you want them to grow or in root trainers [I use the inner tube of loo rolls] so that when planted out the roots aren't disturbed.

Hello everyone sweetpeas are usually easy to grow. When my husband was alive (he was a gardener) he used to put them in trays in the greenhouse and they were germinated in about a week. The little plants were there ready to plant out. I tried last year putting the seed straight into the ground - nothing. I had to buy the plants and they did well but I want to be clever this year and grow them from seed. I think I will try putting the seeds in warm water first and see if that works. They are so pretty to see Jazz :(

Hi Michaelmusdaisy It must be the weather we share the same climate. Anything that grows as far as I am concerned is a bonus. Last year when I went into the supermarket a girl was selling lots of plants in the large vestibule I asked if she had any sweet peas, she told me they sold them inside the store in tins. I thanked her and laughed. Jazz

Jazz, I have trouble with sweetpeas too - I got some, which are growing on quite well now, but only about half germinated. I think they need to be somewhere quite warm after sowing and that's what my problem was.
What variety are you growing? I think this may make a difference, also older seed seems particularly reluctant.

I've just sown my second lot yesterday as the first sowing done in October/November has already finished. They went very quickly, I think a bit too much sun as I had them in a pot by the back door so the scent could waft in, but it's South facing. I will keep this lot ... because I'm assuming they will germinate ... more in the shade. I only do the deep purple/black and deep fucshia coloured ones.

I sowed sweetpeas for the first time about a month ago. I only got six out of 12 come up. I re-sowed again and this time only 4 out of twelve have come up.... [IMG]

The ones that have come up have been planted out only for a few of them to be the slugs dinner [IMG]

Hi everyone I am pleased that I am not the only one who has difficulty in growing sweetpeas from seed. LOL you are lucky living in a warm climate but where I live I am only 5 minutes away from the North Sea and sometimes the winds are very severe and cold. Thank you all for your comments Jazz [IMG] [IMG] :D

jazz, where do you germinate them? If it's outside(even in a greenhouse) and you haven't got a cat then you might find that mice are fond of them. I always start mine inside even though I've got a cat! ;)

Just planted out my sweet peas yesterday grown from seed,I have tried some perenial ones. They look a lot thinner and darker in colour than annual but seem strong enough to go outside now. [IMG]
