the leaves on our tree develop these black spots every year for as long as i can remember, just coming into autumn before they fall from the tree. there are three of these trees doing the same, the biggest about 80ft.is this the normal process for them or have they got some type of fungal disease? i probably should have this in the diseases section, but thought id try it here amongst the tree dwellers :D , thanks

I've seen it as well tig, I dont think its normal, I would guess fungal, think it starts in late summer.
Dont think it does any real harm though, could be wrong.

It is called TAR SPOT, and causes no long term damage, especially as it usually appears just before leaf drop. Collect and burn infected leaves. Don't compost or collect with leaf mould, it may only spread the problem. There is no treatment i know of, nor do i think it is neccessary. So no need to worry, do hope this helps.

I've seen it all over the place - in St ALbans area, and up here around Falkirk. Doesn't seem to harm the tree itself, fortunately.

ive looked up tar spot and it does seem to be that, with no major need for concern. can make a tree unsightly but it doesnt appear until near autumn when the leaves are going to fall anyway.
    thanks all.
