I have recently moved house and tried to grow some blackcurrant bushes near to a Sycamore tree. They appeared to establish OK at first but then developed extensive brown stains on the leaves and some died. I suspect that this was due to sap dripping from the Sycamore. Is this possible? Any ideas (apart from chopping down the Sycamore or moving the blackcurrants)?

Hi Prastio, not a good idea to grow your blackcurrants under the shade of the sycamore, it's unlikely to be sap you could get honeydew off aphids dripping on(sycamores are prone to them)more likely to be rust here is a link tells you how to deal with it,http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/techniques/pests/rust.htm

go with walnut with the rust as this can be a common problem i used rose clear on mine and it worked think you need to move your blackcurrant bush a.s.a.p. the sap off the sycamore wont be a real harm to your bush itself but dont think it would be to nice on the fruits..
would you buy a drink called "blackcurrant and sap" doesnt sound to nice and i bet it doesnt taste nice either [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Thanks for the advice. I reckon that the "browning" I suffered is more severe and extensive than rust, and the severity seems proportional to the distance from the Sycamore. I reckon that I have no choice but to remove the surviving plants but I'm still interested to know what the cause of the damage is. I tend to the aphid theory.
BTW, I had some spinach growing nearby and that shows evidence of the same "drop damage" so it does seem to be something dripping from the Sycamore.
The problem was very pronounced in July/August but seems to have eased off now.

What it will be is that the aphids are feeding on the sap. They produce excess sugary stuff as honeydew which drips off on to the plants underneath. Sooty mould would then grow on the honeydew. That is then going to affect the plants ability to photosynthesise.
