    I have just acquired a tiny scrap of garden on the north Kent coast. There is an existing fig tree on one wall but everything else is scorched-earth new. My other half doesn't really approve of plants (nasty organic insect-attracting things) but I pacified him by promising that it would be an all edible or potable garden, i.e. everything in it is capable of being made into, or adding flavour to, a food or drink. That actually covers a lot of ground - all the way from herbs and grape vines to roses (rose petal jam) and myrtle.
