    Hi guys,
Has anyone bought one of those syphon hoses for a water butt. Also thought I could use it to syphon grey water from bath as it's down stairs. I wondered whether a very slight uphill gradient on the garden would effect the flow of water. Any ideas?

The diference in height between the top water level and delivery point (head), the diameter of the hose and the length of hose all determine how effective a siphon will be. Basically the higher the head, the larger the diameter of hose and the shorter its length the better. Hoses can run uphill providing the delivery point is not above the siphon reservoir.

I've never used a siphon pump as it's easy enough to start a siphon by pre-filling the hose with water or sucking one end until the water starts to flow over the highest point. For a barrel I've always used a bottom tap and either a watering can or hose.

Not sure of the legality of emptying bath water via hose to water the garden if a hose-pipe ban is in place. I think some water boards frown on it and you may get nosey neighbours asking questions.

I would have thought using used bath water wouldn't be a problem. To be honest I've never heard of it being a problem- but I will try and find out. The amount of water water being wasted by leaving taps on and pipes bursting is huge. Reusing water that you hve already used would seem a sensible way of watering plants when most people water things with tap water when there is a hose pipe ban on.
I have had funny looks off people when watering plants , even though I know it's grey water. But I am extremely careful to conserve water and if anyone asked me about it I would be more than happy to explain.
Does anyone else out there use grey water?
Has anyone had problems doing this?

I've checked around and it does apear to be OK to empty a bath via a siphon and water the garden even during a hose-pipe ban. It is not OK to leave a bath tap running while you do though ;)

........and don't use the bathwater if you've had it full of bubblefoam, shampoo or other bath additives!
