Does anyone else have trouble getting Thompson and Morgan seeds to germinate?? I am planting delphiniums and various other perennials to plant out in autumn to over winter. I have a variety of seed from various companies and including my own collected seed which is very fresh. I don't have any trouble germinating Unwins, Mr Fothergills seed and my own fresh seed is throwing itself out of the ground, but Thompsom and Morgan seed has a very poor germination rate, less than 10% in most cases and they are not gernerous with their seed in the first place!

Is it just me or should I avoid this company in future.

      Hi Mrs C,

Only one I remember this year was their Losetto Tomato seeds, only 6 seeds for £3.49 & only 3 of those germinated, and that wasn't through lack of care, not at that price.

Think most of the rest of their stuff was ok, but I generally buy Kings seeds as they are cheaper.

My own experience with T&M is not great, I had similar troubles with T&M seed the year before last and with T&M Plants the year before that.

This year, I ordered and paid for some plants from them which a month later arrived...dead as a dodo. I complained but it was a full 2 months before replacements arrived.

I wont be ordering from them again...

      Steve...:)

I think it depends on what seeds you try; I've had near 100% germination on some things, poor germination on others and on some occasions not even the right variety!!!

Not the most reliable but could be worse........

I use T&M seeds, Chopper, and only buy the toms, peppers and cucumbers seeds. They are expensive for the F1's and with the tomatoes [Rosada] you only get 5 seeds to the packet. If you only get 4 germinating as I did this year it's a bit frustrating when you've paid top price, so I will be complaining about the meager number of seeds and the fact that even one failure to germinate will jack up the cost of the plants that have germinated. But to be fair, there have been other threads and posts complaining about the poor germination of other firms seeds.

I have used T and M for years , originally I bought 100% of my seed from them , now its around 20%. I can't complain about germination rates on any of their seeds , and I do keep records on my trusty Excel sheets !
Now I wonder where the seed companies get their seeds from :what: There must be a limited amount of seed wholesalers who sell to the seed companies. So I would think that there will be no unique supply chain , and that the major seed companies will be buying , in a lot of cases , from the same sources. Does anyone know how the seed supply industry works

To be fair to T and M the varieties that have that poorest germination seem to be the ones that are not readily available from other companies. I bought them from their sale about a month ago when they were selling stuff off half price, maybe you just get what you pay for and they were old seed they were trying to shift. Some of the packs had tiny dust like seed and the quantity was 12, I could hardly find it in the foil :dunno:.

Mrs Chopper, better go to spec savers

I bougth five different bedding seed packets from T&M in March. Four packets germinated OK, the fifth "Nicotiana x sanderae Dwarf White Bedder" failed completely. I don't think it was me because I sowed them all at the same time and treated them identically, including another type of "Nicotiana" which is doing very well. I keep thinking I should complain but then forget, so thanks Mrs C I'll make a note to ring T&M tomorrow and ask for a refund.

Usually I get seeds from Nicky's Nursery, which have always been good, I only went for T&M because they had varieties I couldn't find elsewhere.

As I said before I only buy Toms, Peppers, and Cucumber seeds. I get all my flower seeds from the free packets in the Amateur Gardening Magazine [38 free packets this year!], and guess what?, the free packet seeds all germinated without any failures!!!:D
