Random question, but I'm thinking of getting a tree or shrub to go in a corner that will ideally grow not much more than 3 - 4m, but is also tall and thin with only a little foliage.

I have no idea what plant might fulfil that criteria, but if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them. Thanks :)

        Tricky one. How thin?

I have a Photina which I specifically bought to fill a narrow gap between a wall and an established shrub to quickly block a gap between ours and the neighbours garden. They can be wide and unweildy generally, but I looked around for one that was growing fairly slender and upright main stems and have kept it pruned and shaped to fit the gap, seems to be doing ok and is about 8ft so far. Not ideal though I admit.

A columnar cypress or juniper would be a possibility but slow growing and bit too bushy for your situation?

I like @Spruce suggestion - never seen those before but looks handsome, wondering if it is thornless.

Will look forward to other suggestions.

That Berberis is interesting, I like the way it spirals.

I've been looking at this fastigiate Acer [IMG]

Bamboo was another choice but I'm not sure that really works.

In my mind, I was hoping for something with leaves that were a bit ferny or a bit tropical in look. E.g. the Wollemi pine is very unusual when young but grows far too big.

It's basically to be stuffed into a corner of the patio, which gets good sun all morning til lunchtime. It won't block the light of anything else so can be tall, but I don't want it to take up much space.

As always, I don't ask for much ;) hehe

Perhaps it's best to go for a shrub that doesn't mind pruning, and then shape it.

I really like Italian cypresses. The colour would stand out nicely against a dark fence.

Does it need to be evergreen? Rowan (Mountain Ash) can be tall and thin with fern-like leaves and also has lovely berries and coloured leaves in autumn.
