Like most young, newly married couples, my daughter and son-in-law's ideas for their garden aren't matched by their budget.

To cut a long story short, they want 3 (very) cheap 'things' - about 1metre tall - to stand on their dark patio. Of course, they'd like something like Victorian chimney pots but even the plastic ones are beyond their budget. They'll plant them up eventually, but for now they just want 'height'.

As a temporary solution, my first thought was that they could use something like 160mm or 200mm plastic underground sewer pipe which they could cut into lengths of their choice and paint, but I'm sure there are much better solutions so, suggestions .... please?

Painted oil drums, home-made timber planters, tower of bricks...

Old car tyres in a pile, painted a funky colour? Maybe not, perhaps we're past the hippy-chic gardening stage.

Loofah's got it right again. Homemade timber could look fab, could be painted whatever colour they fancy and could be FREE from reclaimed timber. You could have fun making 3 sculptural objects, well I would, anyway.

I think the plastic tubing option would work out surprisingly expensive.

Ask on freecycle? They may well get genuine Victorian chimney pots ...

Thanks for the suggestions - I should have perhaps mentioned that the 'patio'- which they inherited - is (roughly) a right-angle triangle the longest side of which is only 2m, so anything standing on it has got to be both tall and slender - and anyone who suggests Heidi Klum or Gisele Bundchen, may find themselves on the naughty step (alone!)
