tamarisk from cutting: how quickly does it grow?

    hallo,

    about to take a hardwood cutting from an established tamarisk - how quickly will the cutting take root and grow?

    Normally with this type of cutting, you would push them in the ground somewhere out of the way, and forget about them until the spring. Take lots of cuttings as there can be a large failure rate.:gnthb:

    does the hardwood need to be from a newish shoot or a real hard wood?

    Hardwood in a tamarisk is mature wood from the previous season's growth or earlier.
    You can try rooting in water in a jar and it should work but personally I'd try a few cuttings in pots. Once rooted and into growth (next spring) you can expect it to put on about 1m in 2 years.
    Another route (root?!) to try is just take a thickish branch and shove it into the ground, tamsarisks are a bit like willow and will, with a bit of luck, just put out roots and grow.

    BTW Tamarisks are quite good for creating bonsai trees.

    hallo dave w and daitheplant, one more thing: in what season should i go for the cuttings? -- previous efforts taken in May have not been successful, boohoo, karaman
