    Hi,
I think this is a tamarix due to the pink feathery flowers, ok not strictly a tree but tree sized.

I about a year ago the trunk split downwards where it forked into two. I reduced the size of the banch to reduce the weight and tried to tie it together again. It kept resplitting so in the end I have used three tie wraps, not the most natural looking but so far successful.

Could you recommend a course of action so I could try to save this lovely thing? I'd be happy to try and reduce it further but am afraid of doing more harm than good.

    Thanks
    David

One thing that might be worth doing as a precaution is to root some cuttings. Tamarisk roots almost as easily as willow and grows quite rapidly.

    Hi David
i have a very old and once large Tamarix which was here when I came 22 yrs ago .It has been damaged a few times in hich winds and i have cut it down to about a foot high a couple of times and it has regrown .I would do it just after it has flowered this year,It will have quite a lot of new growth by autumn .It may take 2/3yrs to start flowering .As mentioned in previous answer take a few cuttings as a back up ...
