Not really pets and not really wildlife, but some of you horse lovers might be interested [IMG] Tarpans are descended from the wild horses of Europe and were featured in prehistoric cave paintings. They were almost extinct and only survived in Poland. The last one was hunted and killed itself by jumping over a cliff. Luckily, they had bred with the local peasants' horses. From these cross breeds, selective breeding has restored the prehistoric horse almost exactly. These are now living on Redgrave Fen in Suffolk where they help to graze the fens of rank grasses and allow wild flowers to flourish :D

These two were corralled as they had hoof problems. There are about twenty on Redgrave Fen, but I couldn't get close enough to the others for a photograph

[IMG] They are superb Hornbeam & how wondeful to have brought a breed back....!!
[IMG] Seeing that pic , has made me think of when I was a kid growing up in a small village in the New Forrest... Heaven...!! [IMG] The forrest ponies of course wander at will, we used to feed them, some of them were quite friendly, but of course you had the odd one who didn't want to be disturbed & would turn round & give you a quick nip or a swift kick...!!! Had some nasty bruises I can tell you... Saw our 1st foal being born from behind a bush, so as not to diturb the mother... Gypsies who still lived in the old benders & had horse & carts on the Perlieu.....!! As Kids we would find it very amusing if they got into somebodies garden, watching the people trying to shoo them out. You might be sat in the garden, or in our case playing & they would stick their heads over the hedge & start eating the flowers or whatever they could reach.....!! We even found the odd one that would give you a ride... thought that was wonderful..!! We had one pony to share between 3, so it was fun to find another....!! Gosh.. what you get up to as kids...... Those were halcion days..!!! No worries about where you went, or how far..!! Always had our dog with us anyway.... [IMG] Strange how the mind plays tricks. It always seems to be mainly sunny days in those memories, but it obviously wasn't, as they stretch over several years. Except when it snowed...Yippee, tin trays & toboggens down the hill...!!!!!!! :D Ooops got carried away there... ( I originally posted this in "My babies" but thought it fitted in better here..........)

That is a great pic Hornbeam - so lovely to see this old breed alive and well in Suffolk [IMG] I remember it well from my Observer Book of Horses - I knew them all personally when I was a young horse-mad gal! And MF - the New Forest is my favourite place in the world - I spent all my childhood hols there and still visit 3 or 4 times a year cos we are quite near. When I win the lottery I am going to buy a house slap bang in the middle of a forest glade :D

What I meant to say was...we have these horses introduced to our local nature reserve, no pics I am afraid as they are very hard to get close to

[IMG] It is a magical place I agree Marge. I was born in Fordingbridge & most of my childhood was spent in & around the forrest with short burst elswhere, but back we would all come after a while... I still have family there so go down once a month at the moment. If I won the lottery, I too would move there. Only I know where the house for me is ;) so would have to knock the door & ask them how much??? :D :D

[IMG] Well well, small world Marge, my relations now live on the outskirts of Fordingbridge..!!! The town is a little different now, but the old game butchers we used is still there & still used by the family...!! The inside of the shop hasn't really changed. The little office where you used to go & pay is still in there... although not used for that now...!!!! Still has the only "Dolls Hospital that I know of too....!!! The tiny village we lived in hasn't changed much either. So you see, my secret house would be going home in a strange way....!!!! We had a swimming hole area on the Avon not far from where we lived, that we went to. Learnt to swim in that river..!!! :D :D Sadley all fenced off to the public now... Blacksmiths still there though...!!!!! Aaaahhhh memories...... :D :D

Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire has Tarpan horses too and I managed to get a bit closer to them today. Good to see these prehistoric horses alive and well in a natural and wild landscape.

    Great pictures Hornbeam

At first glance, because of the angle of the ears of the one in the middle, I thought it was a unicorn. Now that is really prehistoric!!!

Thanks Marge. It seems that several nature reserves are using them to keep down grasses etc. You may find it worthwhile to contact your local county Wildlife Trust and ask if any are near you.
