Taxis fares came up in a conversation of ours recently so it reminded me of of this.

It may be of interest to anyone you know who is registered as disabled.
I'm not sure if every local authority has this scheme, but it is available in the Manchester area.
A few people I know with similar circumstances were unaware of it.

For many years now, I've submitted an application form to Manchester Corporation on behalf of my wife and a cheque for £30.
In return she receives £300 of taxi vouchers, which can be used by her, to pay for fares in any black cab.
The application is a bit involved now as in the past there apparently had been some abuse. So now there's a photograph of the person to whom the vouchers are issued on each voucher.

This is of particular help to my wife for her monthly trips into Manchester to the hairdressers, as the journey in now costs £20.

Well, not wishing to be accused of bangin' on about it, but if my wife were physically able to hop on or off a bus, she'd gladly do without the vouchers. Taxi drivers help her in and out of their cabs. Their availability gives her a bit of independence so she's not always dependent on me to take her everywhere.

I only started the thread in case it might be of help to others.

    Yep no problem Doghouse.
Just thought there might be slightly more essential trips that were needed.

True, but having her hair done takes her mind off her other problems.

What with trips to the doctors and hospital for consultations treatments and check-ups, they don't last a year. Many others will be in the same situation.

My 87 year old mother used to be issued with tokens that could be used for taxis or buses, but a few years back they changed it to a bus pass, which being that she is disabled is of absolute no use to her.

So the bus pass stays in the drawer and she is dependant on someone taking her everywhere.

This has involved me coming home from work which is about 9 miles away, picking her up, taking her to the doctors which is about a quarter of a mile away, and then going back to work.

Seems a bit of a palaver, plus I lose money while I'm not at work.

Similiar problems here, poor old Mother-In-Law is too bad to get out of the house now, but we have found a very nice mobile hairdresser that comes out to her. She doesn't charge too much either - less than a taxi fare.

I wouldn't dare suggest that to my wife.

I'm sure your M in L has an excellent hairdresser, but they are few and far between in this area.

She's been going Wella near Manchester Town Hall for over 20 years.

It's where they teach all the latest cut and colouring techniques to salon professionals. She as many other women invited, is lucky enough to be used as a model so is actually charged only a token amount, much less than the taxi fare. The best part about it is they that carry out exactly what the model wants done, as that would be how it is in a high street salon.

When my Mum applied for her bus pass they actually asked whether she would prefer taxi vouchers. The only restriction, in their area at least, was that only one taxi firm would accept the vouchers.

That seems rather tight of them. In Manchester, all black cabs are obliged to take them.
