My majestic, beautiful 15ft Cordyline has had to be cut down :( :( It's lying in a sorry heap in the border and I can almost hear it whispering "murderer" :( [IMG]
I keep telling myself that it was the best thing to do, that the base was rotting and it had started to rock quite severely in the wind. But I still feel terrible :( Trying to cheer myself up with the fact that there are 3 babies growing from the stump and it will be fun to watch them grow - but still feel bad about killing it :( :(

    Thanks Fancy,
Don't know how old it was it was here when we moved in. But the previous people had badly neglected the garden and the wet grass constantly round its base had set off the rot. The last few years it has got a lot taller but was starting to rock so bad that I was scared it would come down on one of the kids.
Watching the 3 babies grow will be fun though [IMG]

Awww you do have my sympathy. I hate it when I have to cut down something ~ I always apologise to it :( [IMG]

Least you have the consolation of watching the off-spring grow and develop :D

    Thanks guys!
Knew you'd understand [IMG] Neighbour thinks I'm bonkers coz she saw me stroking it's leaves and talking to it  I just wish the gardener would take it away and then I won't have to look at its corpse anymore :(
I'm sure the babies have grown a bit already - named them Bonnie, Banana and Mo :D

If the babies are growing from the stump, then they are like clones of your tree and so it lives on. That is exactly what happens when trees are coppiced - (cut down to ground level) Coppiced trees can live for 1000 years so all is not lost :D

    Thanks everyone [IMG]
Feeling a tad better now, less like a murderer
Hornbeam - yes the babies are sprouting from the stump so I've got 3 for the price of one!!!
Rosa - I talk to all my plants, I know I'm probably potty!!! Normally I just whisper so hopefully it isn't noticeable to people. But hell, if it's good enough for Prince Charles it's good enough for me :D :D

Yes I talk to my plants and so does Prince Charles. Think about it ...all that carbon dioxide that you breathe out over your plants when you chat to them. They breathe it in and breathe out oxygen which you breathe in. Good for both of you [IMG]

I never thought about it like that Hornbeam [IMG] Mine are normally words of encouragement or commiseration. I also have to admit that I talk to the slugs as I collect them up  telling them to please leave my plants alone and how there's yummy things for them to eat where I put them over the hedge :D

I can sympathise. I had to lop a Laburnam for a customer in spring just as it was in full bloom. Trunk was rotten and it had fallen over the path along the main road.

I do confess to having a celebration every time I have to fell a Leylandii though and the best tree I ever got rid of was a Monkey Puzzel that I inherited when I moved once - I hated that tree with a passion. As a matter of interest MP wood burns like rocket fuel - fair cleared my chimney so it did!
