Robert, I am sure you know that as well as the Temple Newsam house, there is a really nice large walled garden and long greenhouse that is quite a distance from the house, and not obvious.

Trip today is cancelled due to risky weather. We have already heard of flash floods over that way and have to say its very grey looking over the Vale of York this morning. very warm and muggy. Ideal heavy shower conditions.
Ah well there always another day. Maybe Thursday as we have the cavity wall installation guys coming tomorrow.

The day dawned bright for our trip to Temple Newsum today
Temple Newsam is one of the great historic estates in England. Set within over 1500 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland landscaped by Capability Brown in the 18th century, it is a magnificent Tudorâ??Jacobean mansion. Famous as the birthplace of Lord Darnley and home to the Ingram family for over 300 years, the mansion houses rich collections of works of art. The garden is renowned for its Rhododendron and Azalea walk and features the National Plant Collections of Delphinium, Phlox and Aster noviâ??belgii. Europe's largest working Rare Breeds Farm, with over 400 animals, is set within the original estate Home Farm.
I was speaking to an Ian Moss who is a greenhouse there and he tells me some of the geranium climbers are 30 year old.
I can highly recommend this for a visit if you are in this area and have a day to spare
    enjoy my picturs

Can I make a few people jealous, I live about 5 mins drive away from Temple Newsam, and spend many a happy hour there!

Capney if you are ever in the area again, there is always Lotherton Hall near to Aberford.

Lucky you pstar.just 33 miles from me. Yes Lotherton is on the list for a visit very shortly. We were there many years ago and I understand it is much improved and a vast amount of money has been spent on the place.
Castle Howard is now way up the list for visit this Summer.

    I especially like:

Your head-on photo of Strelitzia - I've taken mine sideways on and yours are more "bird" like - more menacing. Must remember to try that next year :)

Anyone know that the pink spire with the double bend in it is? (the photo with the person with light blue top in background)

The geranium towers. How do they do that? is it sort of like a stand of hanging baskets?

The greenhouse. I want one like that! (Have they painted it with coolglass? I'm surprised they need to do that with a large house)

The pig climbing the wall :hehe:

I really dislike: the planting of bedding plants along the wall. Way WAY too much work!

    Morning K
Glad you appreciate the Strelitzia picture.
As far as tillting the camera goes. Try it, but it does not work very well on horizons!
The pig shot is actually 90 degrees out. Seems If I correct in photoshop and then upload to photobucket it goes for a 90 twist and I have to correct it!

The geranium towers are simply one plant with several bas stems.
At about 30 years they simple give up.
There are horizontal wires running the length of the wall for support.
They start new plants all the time to replace ones that have expired and when it comes to dead heading they often use volenteers to do the job!
I have more stunning pictures I can post later.
    Thanks for the interest
    robert

    Picture number seven.
    K asked for an ID.
It is something I have never seen before.
A large plant about 7 foot high with an equal spread.
Softwood stems. OH likened it to a budlia but I reckon its a long way from a Budlia

"The geranium towers are simply one plant"

Wow! Didn't know that was possible ...

"At about 30 years they simple give up."

I'll let my heirs worry about that then !!
