I don't know if you have ever heard of the tens machine, but it is a device that blocks the pain messages to the brain and stimulates the pain-relieving properties of the body.
If somebody would give it to you as a present would you make you feel like an old bat or would you appreciate it?

Lots of conflicting reports from Tens Machine users ..
i suppose i would suck it and see .. Micky :sunny:

TENS is a non-invasive, safe nerve stimulation intended to reduce pain, both acute and chronic. While controversy exists as to its effectiveness in the treatment of chronic pain, a number of systematic reviews or meta-analyses have confirmed its effectiveness for postoperative pain, osteoarthritis, and chronic musculoskeletal pain.[6] Conversely, results from the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain, reported in early 2008, showed no clinically significant benefit to TENS for the treatment of neck pain when compared to placebo treatment.

a few weeks ago, at a large shopping centre, there was a section cordoned off that was demonstrating some little gadget that has several pads, and which is connected to muscles on your body

cannot remeber what it was called, but if memory serves me right, it costs approx £115

there are several settings (I think there were 10), and she had a booklet showing acupuncture points of all the muscles in the body, and applied the pads to the various spots

the girl placed the little pads on different parts of my arm and switched it on

all the muscles in my arms started contracting and expanding and you could actually see them do this

    amazing machine ....

I have no pains or aches, but if I did, I would look more closely at this .... I think it's some type of Tens machine

I've never used one but when my youngest daughter was born (and this was 25 years ago), a couple of the Mums in the maternity ward had chosen to use one during labour (rather than wimping out like some I could mention - me for instance! - and opting for an epidural). One said it was great, the other said it did nothing ... but then others who had an epidural said how good it was, whilst although I was perfectly content with mine, I'd have needed a serious 'top up' if they had had to do an emergency caesarean as they thought they might.

What I'm saying is that some things work better for some people than others and I guess it depends on what type of pain you need relief from.

There's another similar product on the market called 'Pain Gone' (available from Amazon et.al.). My Father bought one when he had a knee problem, said it was absolutely no good at all and swore about wasting his money - my Mum on the other hand, tried it for the arthritis in her fingers and swore by it. I've still got it, but have never needed to try it.

I guess, if something works for you then, old bat or not, you'd appreciate it. :)

I`ve had a TENS machine for 3 or 4 years now. I have a back problem and I find the machine really does help in reducing the pain.

I got a shot of one when I had shoulder damage and pain
    It certainly works
The pain of the shock in a different area of the body TOTALLY takes the mind off the shoulder pain :-)

A bit like you have a really sore thumb so you drop a brick on your big toe
    The thumb pain has gone

To answer the ORIGINAL question what if someone gave me it as a present
Well IF they knew me well like a member of the family and Knew I suffered pain it would be appreciated
If they were just a friend, then I think they have a cheek, interfering old bat

      Only by the distraction method
      Slight headache sir
Whack your thumb on a vice with a hammer, Headache gone :heehee:

In reality the electric pulses in the muscle distract from the acutal pain in the muscle
      Distraction
Do you concentrate on the toothache
When you are talking to an attractive middle aged brunette who may want to take you home
Err the toothache does not re appear until around noon next day
