Evening everyone and what a lovely evening it is!!

I've just bought a teracotta boot, it's only small but when i came to plant something in it, i realised that there isn't any holes in the bottom for drainage.

    Will anything survive in it?

 if not what a bloody stupid idea!!

if its clay it will "breath", you could get away with half filling it with gravel

Teracotta, regardless of shape is relatively soft and can be easilly drilled with a masonry drill. If using a hammer drill switch the hammer action off and drill using very light pressure especially as the drill breaks through the other side.

For a boot you will probably need a few holes about 6mm dia. You can drill larger holes but its risky as you could crack it.

For glazed pots, scratch through the glazed surface first so that the drill bites rather than skidding off the hard surface.

I did consider the drill option but thought it may crack it. i might try LG's previous advice first and if nothing grows i'll try your idea.

Knowing me, frogesque I will crack it!!

Handy tip there about the glazed pots though... ;)

Gravel should work too but make sure you empty the boot of any water before winter as the frost will split it.

For drilling you can always practice on broken pots untill you get the feel for it. ;)
