I have a water jet cat scarer connected to a hose with a Hozelock connector, 12 months old. A few months back the connector failed and the lawn was saturated. I've no idea how long the water had been running. We're on a meter. My last two 6 month water bills were both around £140. Just received latest bill... £522.76p! and a note from my water company telling me I'm using more water than normal, am I using any new equipment? So that failure cost me around £380. I use Gardena connectors now, never again Hozelock.

Oh dear, it would have to be on for a fair bit to hit that target.
Was it that either the hose end separated from connector or the connector separated from the unit it was attached to?

Hi Liz. The connector separated from the unit. We were at home at the time and I discovered it about 24 hours after I connected it. So the longest it could have been running would have been 24hours.

I have recently bought a Gardena sprinkler - I was quite reluctant to do so because it was not cheap, but I have to say that so far it has been exceptionally good.

I did wonder. Sometimes the connection can be just not tight enough and the pressure forces them off. What you needed was this connector.

      AquaStop Connector | Hozelock Ltd

That way once parted it would have just shut off the flow of water.

Trouble with the Aquastop connectors is that they tend to blow off the hose (they leak at the back of the connector)

Well, I have a Hozelock hose with a 30 year warranty. Had it since 2014. I complained the hose has a tear in it..where it regularly kinks. Hozelock will replace my hose :)

To be honest I’ve never had that issue. What tends to happen is customers have a leak so they purchase a connector then simply push on the hose to the new connector. They should always cut off the old section that was inserted onto the connection so a smaller diameter hose link is formed.
I’ve got the Hozelock fitted to my Krazzle setup hose and it’s been good for 5 years of use and I’ve fitted a few each season for customers and never had issues.

I have had an Aqua stop blow off the tap after about after just a couple of hrs using my soaker hoses.. It sadly doesn’t stop the tap running though when it blows off and that’s where the expense clocks up @Liz the pot if you don't see it running.... ;)

I watched that one a few months back and nearly wet myself laughing - it is the woman getting the carpet shampoo machine going to suck the water up, as if that is going to make any impact on it. So funny

                    That doesn't sound right.

UU (as an example) charge £3.10 / 1000L so that's 120000L that you would have used in 24 hours (worse case)

                    That's 5000L / hour

An old style tap (without the fascist restrictors of modern day taps) runs at 12L / min

That would be 720L / hour or 17000L in 24 hours

Calculate that back with the UU charge and 24 hours running would cost you £52

or your tap would have to be leaking for almost a whole week to cost £380

I would be asking questions of your water company

That's their bill. The graph on the right shows our last two bills + this months. Any thoughts?

                      Hmmm

                      121m3 which is 121000 L

                      Two things I would suggest.

Check your meter reading today - have they made a mistake in the meter reading ? Was the previous meter reading 200 ?

Then keep a note of your meter readings on a weekly basis to see that you are not using excessive water

By my dirty maths you should be using about 10 to 15m3 a month
