We have inherited a Leylandii hedge at the front of the house. I took it right down when we moved in and keep it at a reasonable height but long term I think it will be going. Once I summon up the nerve to tackle its chunky root system

Dee you certainly have done an awful lot to your plot and but I think one can only learn by one's own mistakes some things work well for others while the same thing is soo not good for yourself!

Regarding the Leylandii in such a small space not a great idea although brilliant for nosey neighbours!
Some of my old neighbours (in our last house) actually used step ladders to peek over our hedge needless to say after I saw that the hedge was allowed to grow upto 6ft funny how now it doesn't bother me being so overlooked now but then again none that overlook out gardens bother with their own plots quite a shame really as your lovely plot shows what one can achieve with good planning and lots of hard work...oh and maybe a bottle or two of the good stuff!
