Here's an extract from the Amateur Gardening Magazine which might be of interest to Allotment owners.

"Allotment gardeners will show off green fingered skills in a new TV contest. The Big Allotment Challenge will air on BBC 2 in April, presented by Fern Britton. It had working titles "The Patch and Grow", Make, eat.
Set to be filmed at a walled garden in Oxfordshire , nine pairs of gardeners will compete over four months. As well as attempting to harvest bumper crops of fruit and veg, they'll be issued with challenges by garden experts.
Silver River Productions, which is filming six, one hour episodes for BBC2 said: "Each episode will reflect the growing season and what's ripe for picking at the time. Couples will face three challenges each week that test horticultural knowledge, creativity and skills. as they've been tasked with turning produce into preserves, as well as creating floral arrangements ". Each episode, the team that fails to impress the experts will be booted off the series.
Experts include Jim Buttress, the RHS Judge, Floral Expert Jonathan Moseley and Preserves Guru Thane Prince. A broadcast date has not yet been confirmed.

The BBC has commissioned a second series of the Great British Garden Revival, it was revealed as AG went to press"

Sounds alright, more interested in growing techniques than the 'what to do with it afterwards'. I can figure that myself. Hopefully they'll get the balance right.

Wasn't there a post on GC some time ago from a TV production company looking for people to participate in something like this? (or might have been somewhere else, I recall reading something about a series in the 'style of' bake-off)

Having watched it I'm only glad I didnt enter it. As usual EVERYTHING on the BBC has to have cookery in it. Won't be long before Huw Edwards will be showing us how to make scones half way through the news at 10

I feel sorry for the contestants who get knocked out each time, fancy having to walk away after putting in all that hard work.

Im enjoying the show but i do feel that something is missing.

They dont seem to spend much time on the growing aspect of the show. It shows a flash of when they first sow the seeds and then a little bit near the end and then the final produce.

I suppose its hard to show all 3 aspects of the show with a decent amount of time for each one.

It does seem harsh with who goes too.

The chinese ladies have been great at growing the veg and flowers but were voted off because they hadnt done well in the flower arranging or cooking side.

As a new allotment holder, when I first heard about this show I was excited, as I hoped to learn a lot about having an allotment etc.

Sadly, after watching about half of episode 1 I lost interest ... making jam and flower arranging just doesn't 'float my boat'

Currently the best gardening show seems to be The Beechgrove Garden.

I do watch Gardener's World too, but although I do like all the presenters, the show is nowhere near as good as it was many years ago, when Percy and Arthur were involved.

Geoffrey Smith was good too, I think he had a special vegetable gardening TV programme, as well as a fruit version too.

Another chap I liked was Keith Fordyce, on a programme I think with Claire Rayner many years ago too.

Oh yes, Christine was good too, on Christine's Garden

I watched the show but was disappointed that it was basically a show where you saw "the end bit" of everything and nothing before.
I wanted to see more how they planted things, and what they looked like after 2,4,6 weeks ect. Being brand new to veggie growing, I really have no idea what my carrots, roots or courgettes should look like at different parts of its growing life (the internet does help though)

A bit of a non event really to me
More of a flower arranging and cookery show, with the addition of show us your best failures

Though I have just realised, that to qualify for the show you had to have been a keen respected gardener with an allotment for years, and this was the final challenge

One can grow the best of veg but have no idea for fruit, or to make Jam or chutney from the fruit

                  Dear BBC,

What a great concept for a show, unfortunately poorly executed and executed is the word that best suits those who where sent home after 15 weeks graft for making a bad chutney...shame on you BBC.

If you pursue a second series next year, might I suggest you have a league table for points till at least half way through the series, perhaps also judging on methods used to grow the fruit and veg, soil preparation etc..you know actual gardening skills.

At least this way those who have grafted for 15 weeks have a fair chance in the competition rather than being executed for a poor chutney.

Harvesting and storage is but a small part of Allotment gardening after all.

                  Regards

                  Steve...:)
