I have just visited this fabulous garden in Leeds today - opened under the National Gardens Scheme. The plants are all, essentially, hardy (with a little help), as Nick doesn't have room for a greenhouse. Having got back, I Googled it and there are loads of references under the words "The Jungle Garden". Its quite a small garden - but inspirational.

I have taken the liberty of some lifting pictures from the Daily Mail site.

              Hi Richard

I was thinking of you - being so close.

Nick Wilson's garden is private and is opened once a year for charity under the National Garden Scheme. This year he opened Sunday 26 July, and he will presumably open it again next year at about the same time of the year. I only saw it because I got hold of one of the yellow Yorkshire Gardens 2015 booklets of all the gardens opening in Yorkshire under this scheme. You can often get the booklets free at garden centres. I will try and remind you next year.

His NGS site is here http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/find-a-garden/garden.aspx?id=31094

He was also interviewed for TV on Calender here http://www.itv.com/news/calendar/update/2015-07-26/the-jungle-garden-hidden-in-the-city-of-leeds/

Can someone kindly tell me how to embed the media item in the above link. I failed to do it.

Zola - I don't know much about palms. The only name that springs to mind is Howea forsteriana (Kentia Palm). But I really don't know. Howreas are usually sold as indoor plants, but Nick doesn't even have space for a greenhouse, so all his plants overwinter outside - with some protection.

I don't know if this is too late for this thread or if you have already found the answer but it's a trachycarpus fortuneii. Lovely palms and in my experience survive pretty well over winter (in my area anyway)

I have just had an e-mail from Nick Wilson to say that his Jungle Garden will be open again on Sunday 30 July 2017, under the National Gardens Scheme.

Its well worth seeing - so put a note in your diaries. It was featured on Monty Don’s Big Dreams, Small Spaces on BBC2 last Friday (Series 3 Episode 5) and is available on the BBC iPlayer here http://www.bbc.co.uk/bigdreamssmallspaces until 19th March.

There are more details on Nick's web site The Jungle Garden – a secret garden
