Are there any laws regarding storing manure on allotment plots and/or sites?
I know many (myself included) store manure to allow rot-down before use and I have never heard of any issues with this, but what about a bulk delivery and storage to an allotment site, for plot holders use?

"X" marks the spot where our gardening club wish to store manure which is around 50-60 yards from the river and just to one side of the carpark, but when the club asked the Parish council, a flat refusal was given without reason. Now the Parish council has been shaken up since then and a new council now sits who are a bit move forward thinking, but before we go and ask again we wish to be sure of our facts. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Good to see you Steve :) The only logical thing I can think of is run off during storage. If the run off were to get into the river it would have a detrimental effect on water quality but 50-60 yards!? If that were their original reason then they were playing it very safe as I'm sure the legal storage distance is much less. My friend has a livery and he was informed (off the top of my head) a distance of about 30 feet. What quantity are you talking?

Funnily enough, I was just reading up on advice given to stables, and picked up the following quote "10 metres from a watercourse and 50 metres from a well, spring or borehole that supplies water for human consumption.

We are well within those guidelines, also I read a bit further and as the manure is to be used as fertiliser it is not considered as a controlled waste anyway.

Maybe it's just a case of "educating" our Parish council.

It probably also depends on what sort of manure you are talking about.

Chicken manure and, to a certain extent, horse manure contain nitrates and used to be a way of producing potassium nitrate (saltpeter) to make 'black powder' gunpowder (75% saltpeter, 15% charcoal and 10% sulphur).

Someone in the council may have been silly enough to worry about the non-existent threat of an explosion .

Otherwise, I can't see any problem - but read this Storing or spreading slurries and solid manure | Business Link

If it's compost type manure then there is no problem in the slightest.

That's too often the case - there's no qualifications whatsoever required to be a Parish Councillor and DWP permit those deemed mentally incapable of any other form of work to be parish (district, county, etc,) councillors without any loss of benefits.

Many years ago I became a Parish Councillor because I was so appalled at their incompetence and lack of expertise. I gave up being a parish councillor after one term because I realised they were even worse than I originally thought they were.
