Took the trip to the tip today to get rid of some junk ( old ironing board etc ) and struck lucky at the same time. I picked up a garden fork ( wooden handle type ) and a hoe that had been left there as rubbish. Nothing wrong with either of em !

Have you found anything at the tip ?

Yes, some years ago somebody left a zimmer frame right next to my trailer at the tip, so threw it in the trailer and took it home for mother in law, just what she wanted!

Also helped myself to decent bricks left in the hardcore bin. ;)

You have just hit a very sore point there I am afraid.

My husband (and many of the other villagers) used to go to our local tip with a shopping list.

Old kitchen units for hen houses, deep freezers for feed bins, old wooden furniture which he did up, the list is endless.

Now in the name of "recycling" we are prevented from "reusing" its just madness!

Sorry Waco - Didn't realise it was an issue.

I was positively encouraged to take the bits I took.

Maybe different local authorities see things differently ?

Hey, folk, you'd love it here. We don't have "tips", they are what the council use but we have these big mobile rubbish units placed strategically along the roadsides where you have to go to put your rubbish in. They are called "lixos" (pronouced lee-shoos). They are veritable gold mines as when you are fed up with something, you neatly place it ... okay, or hapazardly throw it ... next to these bins for others to take advantage of!

You would not believe what you can "find" there. We have got expensive solid wood shutters, cane (4" across) lounge chairs, a mirror, units for the shed ... Our friend found an antique carved oak bedframe and also found a wicker wall unit which she gave to us and we have in our outdoor living room. This same person's husband found all the window frames (including two double French doors) by the side of one!

We call it the Portuguese Recycling System and would not want to be without it. We cannot go by these bins without looking! My sister, Kedi-Gato, I think has become obsessed with looking at rubbish now ... :D :D : ... much to her hubby's dismay! :D

In Newton Abott Devon. The council used to have a resale area. We used to get many a cheap bargain. It is surpising what people throw away.
No such scheme run here in East Yorkshire. So go to car boots in stead for bargains. Got some good tools from these places. Bye G4

We once had a super village skip. I recycled lots of stuff from it> A petrol lawn mower, victorian bath thermometer, boxes of nails, a massive roll of synthetic binder twine, super old dutch hoe with shaped handle, mahogony plant stand, new wheel for my barrow and bikes for the kids.
Now our council have closed it and all "junk" has to go to a central site where it all gets crushed or buried. All has to do with Health & Safety and EU laws.
I'd a dozen perfectly usable PCs at school and wanted to give some to kids whose families couldn't afford one, but the interpretation of H&S by our council said I couldn't.(I did however manage to give 3 away as the council's IT dept. didn't know I had them!)

Um wouldn't be surprised. But don't care. I spent hours and hours trying to find a way around the "cover our corporate back" interpretation of the H&S/EU legislation.
I had the recipients sign a disclaimer absolving me or *********Council of any responsibility for damage, injury or loss arising from use of the donated PCs. It was quite embarrassing giving someone a PC and asking them to sign something like that.
The current state of affairs is utterly insane. I would not be at all surprised to see libraries issuing H&S warnings - This Book is Heavy and May Cause Injury if Dropped

Recycling and health & safety are jokes. Nothing more than jobs for the boys.

I work for a company which delivers food for a nationwide chain. Any food approaching its sell-by date was given to staff and charities that could use it. Not any more, it now goes in the skip. The waste is dreadful, I'm talking tons here.

Yes, I was told about that too, Rich - when I was working short-term for a firm that fits your description..... I found it absolutely appalling.

My local tip has recently banned 'resales' and 'takeaways' on the grounds that it has no room for storage of resale items, and no room for parking for people who want to take out rather than bring in. Also it apparently takes the staff away from their 'proper' duties and there are 'insurance problems' with people taking stuff away free.
Is 'CODSWALLOP' an acceptable term on GC?

    EXACTLY!

We had a guy that made his living just from salvaging stuff from the tip and re selling it, nothing to do with the council.
